This Weekend!!!

Join the Charlottesville Albemarle Kennel Club for their 60th and 61st annual back to back All Breed Dog Shows on June 1st cute puppyand 2nd at Foxfields.  Nearly 80 different breeds will compete for Best In Show each day.  The cost to attend the show is only $5 a car load, so bring the whole family for a full day of fabulous dogs.

Judging will start at 9am each day.  The full schedule of what breeds will show in which ring is HERE.  You will be able to watch the Westies and then see the Shepherds.  Get a close look at the Labs and paruse the Portuguese Water Dogs.  This year, there will also be a Best Puppy In Show competition with a class for 6 months and under, 6-9 months and 9-12 month old dogs.

For the very first time, our own Charlottesville Albemarle Kennel Club Dog Show will feature the AKC’s new addition My Dog Can Do That!  It’s a great way for the general public to get involved in dog sports with their canine best friend.  My Dog Can Do That is free – and no pre-registration is required.  Bring your talented dog to the My Dog Can Do That! ring and let them tackle some agility obstacles with the help of professional trainers. They also will have information on where to find professional dog training classes in your community.  Discount enrollments in the AKC Canine Partners program for all dogs also will be available.  Participating dogs should be 6 months or older and have proof of rabies vaccination.  Register from 9am-3pm both days.

On Sunday from 11:45-12:45, Lynn Childress from the Albemarle County Police Department will be on hand with a demonstration with Leo, her belgian malinois K9 Officer.  The CAKC has given donations towards purchasing fully trained police dogs to be utilized by the Albemarle Police Department’s K9 Unit.  Service dogs are utilized by the police to track lost people, criminals and clues to investigations.  They are utilized in many very dangerous situations so they must be well behaved, well trained and extremely alert.   In years past, the CAKC  has provided funds to purchase protective vests for police dogs. The organization also supports the SPCA, Noah’s Ark, Caring Companions and Hearing Dogs.

Judging will begin around 9 a.m., with classes for each breed running in several rings at the same time. The seven groups include sporting, hounds, working, terrier, toy, non-sporting and herding.  The winner of each group then will compete for Best in Show.

These dogs aren’t just for show.  Dogs may not be our whole life, but they do make our lives whole.  Our dogs are our family, our friends, our children.  Spend the day with the very best dogs on June 1st and 2nd.  Just West of Charlottesville at Foxfields.  Bring plenty of sunscreen and a lawn chair if you’d like.  Be ready for some fast and furry fun!  See you there.

Fresh Air and Fur

OK.  Let’s talk dogs.  You know you love em.  Who wouldn’t?  They’re lovable.  They’re soft.  They’re cute.  They lick your face.  What more could you ask for?  I often wish my own dog had a job so she could pay for some of the kibble she consumes, but beyond that… :)

Some dogs have jobs.  They’re called Show Dogs, and they work VERY hard.  Not just to be pretty and march back and forth without getting distracted by the occasional wiff of sausage or something equally yummy.  Fact of the matter is, every dog has a distinct look and personality based on its breed.  At a Dog Show, the judging is based on how closely the dog matches that ‘breed standard’, which has been set over years and years and years of research and observation of that breed.  With 175 AKC-recognized breeds to choose from – 80 of those at our own little show, dog shows in general tend to have plenty of competition for Best In Show.

Dog Showing is a sport, but most spectators simply come to see all of the different breeds of dogs either for fun, for the AWW-factor, or because they’re thinking of getting a dog and want to see all of the breeds to compare.  Our CAKC Dog Show is the PERFECT place for that.

Beautiful venue – Foxfields.  Beautiful weekend June 1st and 2nd.  Fresh air and lots of furry fun for all.  Only $5 for a whole car load of people.  Dogs showing in several different rings plus the MY DOG CAN DO THAT area so you can watch some of the local talent in action.  You got to be there.

Top 5 Reasons To Attend This Dog Show

1.  Dogs are lovable and excessively cute… even if they’re ugly.

2.  You and the kids need a fresh air outing and $5 is VERY affordable.

3.  Show dogs are generally VERY well behaved… maybe the kids will learn something.

4.  Attending will GREATLY increase your chances of receiving doggy kisses.

5.  Dogs tend to lie belly up in the sunshine, HAPPIER THAN WE COULD EVER BE.

Longing for a great dog experience?  See you on June 1st and 2nd at Foxfields!
